2024 Summer Intern Experience

09/17/2024

Each summer, Perlo welcomes a new class of interns to introduce them to the world of general contracting while addressing our growing need for talented, hardworking individuals. This year, we were fortunate to host nine exceptional students—five men and four women—hailing from universities across Arizona, California, Colorado, Kentucky, and Oregon.

Throughout the summer, our interns gained hands-on experience in various areas, including shadowing experienced project managers, attending onsite meetings, observing unique aspects of the building process, and participating in formal training sessions. Their exposure spanned multiple disciplines such as estimating, project management, onsite processes, safety, and even business development.

We are also proud to share that two of our interns were recipients of the 2024 Schweiger Memorial Scholarship, joining us at the awards ceremony where their hard work and dedication to their education were recognized.

Here’s what some of our interns had to say about their time with Perlo this summer:

KELLY

College
UNLV

“My mentor had full trust in me with meeting minutes, RFIs, Submittals, Deferred Submittals, and I so appreciated that. I feel like after 12 weeks, I can stand on my own a little. I worked hard and had great support and feel so accomplished after this summer. He let me do so much hands on, taught me great communication skills, how to think on my own and try to figure things out myself.”

DANIEL

College
Colorado School of Mines

“Last summer I worked with Perlo’s field teams, and this summer I got to be part of the project management side. I got to work with a lot of great people, from my mentor to other young professionals, and I feel like I have a new understanding for how things work. I really enjoyed participating in the bid process, talking to owners, connecting with architects, and just getting to be hands on.”

NOAH

College
University of Kentucky

“The intern group got to be very close and I will totally keep in contact with them. We had a really fun summer. All are very driven, great people, hardworking and we all wanted to learn which was cool to be a part of. I’d say we bonded this summer. Our seating arrangement was cool to be super close and hear what all people were working on. We were also right in the mix to learn and hear things going on.”

ALLISON

College
Oregon State University

“Something that surprised me is how close knit of a community Perlo has. No matter the position or title someone holds, everyone is quick to collaborate and help out. We are all learning from one another, and it’s great to be able to learn from individuals with such different backgrounds.”

KELLEN

College
University of Arizona

“Every day has been amazing. You are on your way into work, and a handful of people say your name and “good morning” with a smile—how cool is that for an intern? I wake up every day excited to come to work, truly, as cheesy as that sounds. I can’t say enough how great the people in the office and in the field have been to me. Smart, awesome people who are genuine, kind, and want to see you grow—it doesn’t get better than that.”

MORGAN

College
Oregon State University

“The best part for me was meeting the other interns and building those relationships. Being on site was great. I learned a lot from being around the field teams. My mentor gave me a ton of tasks that stretched me and pushed me out of my comfort zone. Based on the experience some of my friends and classmates have had this summer, I feel really lucky to have learned so much and had this experience.”

HEWITT

College
Oregon State University

“The biggest thing that surprised me about my Perlo experience was how involved every single employee is. I’ve spent most of my time onsite at my project, and you can see how driven everyone is from the field teams to the project managers. I was also able to participate in multiple events/opportunities outside of work-related activities and saw new faces every time.”

MEG

College
Cal Poly

“Perlo does such a great job of letting you try things yourself. I got to work on a budget for an SPG project where the owner wanted a unique addition to their property. There were no plans, so I got to draw up a model to help with sizing and material quantities which was super cool to see that what I was learning in school was applicable to what I was doing at work.”

CAMERON

College
Oregon State University

“I worked with the Special Projects Group this summer, and I was really surprised by the amount of jobs they have going at once. There is always something to do, and they work on so many different types of jobs. The variety let me learn so many new skills and meet lots of new people.”

JOVENSKY

High School Student

“I worked directly with the field crews to learn the trades work. I’d never seen the construction process up close like this before, and it was really neat to be a part of. The team was fund to be around and work with, and they were so helpful in teaming me about everything from the actual work to the tools.”

TAYLOR

High School Student

“Getting to work out in the field this summer with the build crew was so cool. I got to see drywall, painting, electrical work, crane rigging, glass installation, and so much more. Everyone was very welcoming and encouraged my many questions. It was cool to see how all of the work eventually merges together and how important every piece is to the project.”
