Why Safety Is the Foundation of Our Work
Construction Safety Week 2026 is here and it offers us a moment to reflect on why safety is the foundation of everything we do. Every day begins with the same responsibility: to work safely, work smart, and return home to the people who rely on us. That commitment extends beyond our own teams; it’s a promise we make to our clients, our trade partners, and everyone who steps onto a Perlo jobsite.

My Actions, Our Safety: Building a Culture of Shared Responsibility
Last year, we introduced the My Actions, Our Safety initiative to reinforce that safety is both personal and collective. Every decision we make affects not only our own well‑being, but also the people we collaborate with and the communities we build for. And the impact is clear. Perlo earned the AGC Oregon ROSE Award and, for the first time in our history, took first place in our category at the AGC National Construction Safety Excellence Awards. These achievements reflect the care and vigilance each of you brings to your work.

Recognize, Respond, Respect: The 2026 Safety Week Theme
This year’s Safety Week theme, Recognize, Respond, Respect, focuses on preventing serious injuries and fatalities in high‑energy, high‑hazard environments. These principles guide how we protect our teams, how we safeguard our clients’ investments, and how we honor the trust our partners place in us. They’re just as relevant at home as they are on the jobsite.
Fall Protection Awareness: Addressing the Leading Cause of Construction Injuries
Falls remain the number one cause of fatalities and serious injuries in the construction industry. That’s why every Safety Week, we take the time to host fall‑protection demonstrations as a refresher for our field crews and encourage our office teams to participate as well. Understanding the real risks of our work helps all of us appreciate the importance of staying vigilant and supporting one another.

What Safety Means to Our Team
As we kick off Safety Week, we also want to highlight the voices of the people who make our culture what it is. Hear from members of our team as they share what safety means to them.

Allison Muttillo
Project Engineer
Our collective commitment to safety is a key driver of our project success. Over the past few years, Perlo has placed a strong focus on building a positive and proactive safety culture, and that commitment has made a meaningful impact on our project teams. Safety is our number one priority on jobsites because we genuinely care about our people. When everyone understands the importance of working safely, it leads to better decision-making – for our crews and for our projects as a whole. By reducing risk and keeping our teams focused, engaged, and protected, we set our projects up for success. Simply put, safe jobs are successful jobs!

Devin Koopman
Senior Vice President | Partner
Everyone wants each other to go home safely each and every day. We can rally around that simple concept. It doesn’t feel like the safety police anymore, but a collective responsibility to hold each other accountable, including our subcontractors. We’re able to speak to it with proposals, acknowledge our low EMR rate, and it’s becoming a significant aspect of projects with certain clients. Our team has done a wonderful job to get us to this point. It’s especially neat to see other employees, such as a Superintendent and carpenter not part of the Safety Team, recently obtain safety certifications on their own time.

Donna Brewer
Assistant Project Manager
Perlo’s constant emphasis on safety makes me proud to work for this company. Regular reminders, updates, and trainings provide a sense of confidence in the way we as a company behave in a field in which lives are on the line. Having confidence that everyone on our jobsites, especially those in leadership positions, are being reminded of the gravity of their actions and the importance of care for themselves and others in this way is deeply important to the quality of the work being done and the overall impact of our role as a general contractor and large employer in the communities we serve.

Gregg Silliman
General Counsel
We look out for each other, our employees, subcontractors and trade partners, to make sure everyone gets home safe. This minimizes incidents and injuries and reduces associated costs and delays. It builds morale and confidence each day as we take personal responsibility for our work and the safety of others. It leads to performing more consistent, safer, higher-quality work. We take satisfaction in collectively building superior spaces and structures that meet our clients’ needs, and we take pride in knowing they were done right and everyone made it home safe.

Thomas Quesenberry
Vice President | Partner
At Perlo our people and our culture are what makes us successful and at the core of that is the responsibility for all of us to look out for each other. We cannot let anything take priority over the responsibility to keep each other safe. Our new Safety Initiative My Actions Our Safety emphasizes just that. However, we can’t just stop there as we always have to do better. We have to continue to self-reflect as well as look outside for examples on how we can be better. As Joe York once elegantly stated, “At Perlo, our people are our family and we take care of our family”.

Larry Cook
IT Manager
As an IT Manager at Perlo, my role takes me out to active job sites regularly, whether I’m conducting drone flights or installing Starlink systems for the field teams. That means safety isn’t just a policy I read about in the office; it’s something I navigate firsthand every day.
Perlo has been exceptional in making sure I’m equipped for that reality. The training and resources provided have given me a strong foundation for working confidently in construction environments, from understanding site-specific hazards to knowing the protocols that keep everyone around me safe. What stands out most is that safety here isn’t treated as a checkbox. It’s woven into how we operate, and the investment Perlo makes in preparing every team member, reflects that commitment genuinely.

Luke Hamper
Project Manager
Perlo has supported my safety journey by creating an environment where safety is genuinely valued and practiced every day. I feel encouraged to speak up through onsite safety audits and weekly job walks, ask questions, and take the time needed to do things the right way. The company’s safety measures have made a noticeable difference in my day-to-day work, allowing me to stay focused and confident knowing risks are being addressed proactively. I’ve seen how strong pre-planning and open communication can prevent potential incidents while keeping morale high. Our shared commitment to safety, both in the field and in the office, strengthens our teams, improves project outcomes, and reinforces trust across the organization.

Meghan Looney
Director of Human Resources
At Perlo, we understand that every wall we tilt carries the weight of someone’s future. Protecting our people isn’t just a requirement of the job, it’s the foundation of the legacy we build together. Safety is more than compliance; it’s our commitment to ensuring every person goes home to their family whole. There is no work more meaningful than that.

Lance Livingston
Superintendent
Perlo Construction has consistently promoted the highest standard of safety and has supported me at every step as I’ve advanced my safety education and certifications. Their commitment to creating a culture where safety comes first has empowered me to grow both personally and professionally. Throughout my career, I’ve been able to apply my training and experience to develop effective procedures and prevent potential incidents-efforts that reflect the shared commitment to safety that defines Perlo. Together, we continue to raise the bar for what it means to build and work safely.

Mars Gracida
Field Safety Coordinator
I started my journey with Perlo as a laborer apprentice and worked my way up through the field. That experience gave me a real understanding of the day-to-day challenges crews and trade partners deal with. When the opportunity came up to move into a safety role, I applied and was supported in making that transition. Through ongoing training and development, Perlo has invested in me by giving me the knowledge and tools to grow in my role while staying grounded in field experience. That balance helps me relate to crews and trade partners and makes safety conversations more practical, trustworthy, and based on real-world conditions.
To me, this is a strong example of how Perlo invests in its people not just for where they are today, but for where they can grow. That support strengthens our safety culture and helps us work together to prevent incidents and keep each other safe.

John Huddleston
Superintendent
At Perlo, we have a safety standard that sets us apart from other contractors, and our clients notice. When I’ve flagged the need for additional safety equipment that I felt was necessary for the job, the company was willing to invest in it, even when it wasn’t covered in the project budget. Having a full time safety specialist onsite helps keep subcontractors aligned and standards consistent. One example is the full safety warning line system on our roof. By providing this ourselves, we’re able to reduce fall protection violations.

Antonio Gonzales
Field Safety Coordinator
Perlo is where my career in safety began, and their support has been huge in my growth as a safety professional. Through their commitment to development, I successfully earned my CHST certification and completed numerous additional training programs they provided. What stands out most is Perlo’s strong safety culture and proactive approach. They do an excellent job of engaging every worker on site and creating genuine buy-in to the safety program. I’m grateful for the opportunities and foundation they’ve given me to grow and succeed in this field.

Travis Stone
Safety Manager
As Safety Manager, I have seen firsthand how Perlo backs safety with real action. The company has invested in my continuing education and given our safety team the tools we need to improve how we work, both in the office and in the field. That support shows up on our projects. Crews are more engaged. Supers and Foremen bring safety into daily planning, not just as a checkbox. We are seeing better coordination among trades, fewer communication gaps, and more proactive problem-solving before work starts. Safety at Perlo is not seen as a separate function. It is a resource the field relies on. That shift has helped us build stronger trust with our teams and partners.
Over the past year, we rolled out our “My Actions, Our Safety” initiative. We took what we learned, refined our approach, and shared it at AGC of America. That effort led to our first national safety award. It is a clear result of steady work in the field and strong backing from our executive team.
Perlo has stayed consistent. Our executive team is directly involved in safety. They show up on job sites, take part in conversations, and reinforce expectations during both planning and execution. Leadership supports safety and gives us room to keep improving. That has built a culture where people take ownership and look out for each other every day.
Final Thoughts
Safety Week is a reminder, but our responsibility to our team, clients, partners, and the industry extends far beyond these five days. Every action we take on the jobsite, in the office, and in the conversations we have with others has the power to influence how safety is practiced across the construction field. By choosing to work with intention, speak up for what’s right, and look out for one another, we help raise the standard for everyone who builds alongside us. Let’s use this week to recommit to the habits and behaviors that strengthen safety not just at Perlo, but throughout our industry.
